A descendant-led commemoration
Arlinda Flores Mesa Valencia organized the centennial program in the Capitol Auditorium in Austin. Descendants traveled from across Texas and beyond to remember the victims, share family history, and affirm that Porvenir belongs in the history of the state.
From testimony to recognition
The program remembered schoolteacher Harry Warren, who recorded what happened, and State Representative José T. Canales, whose 1919 investigation challenged violence committed by Texas Rangers. Texas Senate proclamations recognized both the centennial and the victims.
A century of silence gave way to a public gathering of families, scholars, artists, and Texans committed to remembrance.
A turning point
The centennial helped unite descendant families and created momentum for the historical marker, educational work, public programs, and the documentary film that followed.
